Coaching Certification Programs

Pt. Grey, Dunbar and Kerrisdale remain among the handful of clubs in the Lower Mainland that offer BCSA coaching certification programs in-house through their own Technical Directors. As a result coaches get to work with a familiar face and have the course divided up into chunks that are easier to attend.

All three courses, Community Coach Child (for those working with U6 to U10 teams), Community Coach Youth (U11 to U14) and Community Coach Senior (U15 to U18) will be offered by the club this year and taught by Gregor Young and Steve Kindel.

Coaches must attend all sessions to get certified. Registration is free through an arrangement with BCSA. Simply type in the payment code for each course. These courses are only open to current Pt. Grey, Dunbar and Kerrisdale coaches and assistant coaches.

Westside Soccer Player Development training program is open to all U9 to U12  players interested in a competitive, tiered development program. Player groupings will be based on placing like-minded and like-skilled players together. This will allow each player to train and develop in an environment appropriate to their ability.

WSPD training sessions focus on skill development, teamwork and age-appropriate tactical play. The program is offered by Point Grey, Kerrisdale and Dunbar soccer clubs and is run and administered by their respective Technical Directors. The WSPD training program is offered in the fall, winter and spring.

Important: Mini league meeting on September 15

All U7 to U10 coaches and/or managers are asked to attend the Mini League Meeting being held at the Hellenic Centre, 4500 Arbutus Street on September 15th, 2010 from 8:15pm - 9:30pm.

Former Pt. Grey player invited to national team camp

Kathryn Baker, who played at Pt. Grey right through U13 until she left to play Metro level soccer at U14, has been invited to the U15 National Team Camp currently underway in Florida.

After making the BC U15 team this past spring/summer, Kathryn excelled so much at centre back, where she was recently moved after many years as a central midfielder, that National U15 team coach Dave Benning made her one of only four girls selected from BC to be invited to the first camp for this U15 team.

The team will train for a week and then get together again in December for another camp. After that, the roster will be trimmed with an eye towards CONCACAF qualifying in fall 2011 for the 2012 U17 Girls World Cup.

Monday Morning Centreback - new coaching blog from Gregor

I've decided to switch to a more flexible, better designed platform for the coaching blog I started this past season and also make it a bit more reader-friendly with some lighter content in addition to coaching pointers. It's called Monday Morning Centreback and it even has its own URL: www.mondaymorningcentreback.com.
Expect lots of World Cup content while it's on.

Point Grey Soccer Early Bird Registration Reminder

Dear Club Members,

As Club President I am writing to remind everyone that the Early Bird registration deadline of May 31st is upon us. Early Bird registration saves you money reducing fees by $30 per registrant. It also helps the Club get organized for the coming season as Early Bird registration gives us a sense of player numbers for each age group and thus how many teams we will form for the fall.

Thank you to all of you who taken the time to contact me to ask questions and discuss our Club registration increases and changes. I have had many inquiries whether by email or at our recent AGM. The increases were driven by the substantially reduced Gaming Commission grant received in 2009 and the prospect, at the time of setting fees this year, that the grants would be eliminated entirely for 2010. Our fee increases resulted in a differential between our Club fees and our neighbouring clubs which has been frustrating for members. As I have explained to many of you, the difference is driven by one of our neighbours not having UBC turf costs and the Gaming Commission grants we received over the last four years being significantly lower than our other neighbour.
